I have some memories of my childhood, and I can even remember my dad, who died when I was five, but not her. I try to think of the days that led up to that one to see if I missed something about her, but I have no memory of her before then. Not a tiny steak knife, but some kind of massive butcher knife glinting in the light like in a bad horror movie. A couple things made that day stand out more than any other: it was my sixth birthday, and my mother was wielding a knife. ![]()

Regardless of preference, there is a lot of growth and complexity in the characters we visit, particularly those who return from the first novel. The characters continue to be a strong point in this novel, although some arcs were more to my personal taste than others. ![]() There’s a richness to it that I enjoy, and it makes the climactic events of the novel hit that much harder once the pace finally does pick up. ![]() Pacing-wise, this is much slower than the first book, but with good reason the deepening of the worldbuilding and the exposition of various political factions in this universe is impressive and expertly done. Black Sun was one of my favourite books of the year when I read it, and while Fevered Star didn’t quite match my expectations in that regard, it was still a superbly crafted tale of political intrigue, shifting allegiances, and navigating a world for which you have no frame of reference. Rebecca Roanhorse’s Fevered Star is a strong continuation of the story the first novel in the series, Black Sun, began to tell. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments War Dog by Damien Lewis![]() Wounded repeatedly in action, shot, facing crash-landings and parachute bailouts, Ant was eventually grounded due to injury. Kaetrin B Reviews / C- Reviews Historical / joint review / NetGalley / Regency / second chance 22 Comments JJOINT REVIEW: Remember Love by Mary Balogh ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Averno by Louise Glück![]() ![]() “Snow began falling over the surface of the whole earth. ![]() To this end, each poem’s consolation rests in its existence as an exquisitely rendered, formal experience outside ordinary time, a notion for which the poem “Telescope” provides this analogy: while gazing up at the night sky, “You exist as the stars exist, / participating in their stillness”-until, that is, “you move your eye away” and realize “not that the image is false / but the relation is false.” Through Averno we come to see that Glück’s skepticism is not about poetry’s supreme fictions but about the relation between these fictions and the non-fictions of experience. But the one true change, Averno suggests with complete candor, has in fact already occurred-in its speakers’ sudden and traumatic matriculations from innocence to experience. Averno is an important collection in that it shows Glück struggling with certain givens, such as the supposed certainty of myths, or the hopeful premise that poetry represents the possibility of change. In truth, Averno reminds us, a poet does not so much determine her themes as decide how to work through them. ![]() Readers familiar with Louise Glück’s work might consider the ordeal of Persephone an unsurprising or even predictable choice of thematic frames. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Waiting isn t easy mo willems![]() Piggie won’t tell him and Gerald discovers that waiting is NOT easy. The one positive thing I will say about the story is that I had to finish it. I haven't ever read/listened to a book I was so eager to review, and I sincerely hope that the author reads these comments. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Also, he sounds like a car commercial announcer so when he narrated any part it came across as cheesy and overdramatic. It was whiny and condescending and like nails on a chalkboard.
